Trisha Lal (Experience Leader)
Hi! My name is Trisha. I’m a senior majoring in Physiology and Neurobiology with dreams of becoming a doctor! I can’t believe my time in Maryland is almost up but I’m very thankful to be able to spend my last year involved in the Alternative Breaks Program as an Experience Leader. I’ve been on two trips previously as a participant and enjoyed both incredibly. I’m very excited to go on another trip this year but this time, I’ll be a leader rather than a participant! I think this will give me the chance to learn from a different viewpoint and to help myself grow further as I continue to give to my community and educate myself. Aside from being involved in Alternative Breaks, I am also Lead Peer Mentor for CMNS, an active member of Students Against Slavery, and a learning assistant for BSCI170. I am also a member of the Killen Lab in the Social and Moral Development Laboratory. Outside of campus, I’m an emergency medicine scribe at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. Clearly, I love to stay busy but I also love everything I do, especially being a part of the Alternative Breaks program!

Michaela Wall (Experience Leader)
Hello! My name is Michaela. This year, I am a co-EL for the Washington D.C. Human Trafficking experience. While it is my first time leading an experience, Alternative Breaks is something that has become extremely close to my heart in such a short time. As a senior, studying Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCJS) with a minor in Law and Society and also having been on this experience the past year, I believe that I have a lot to offer as a co-experience leader. I am extremely excited about this specific experience because it not only allows me to educate others about a social issue that is very important to me, but I also get to continue in my own education while also serving alongside other amazing student activists. In addition to Alternative Breaks, I am also a member of InterVarsity and the CCJS Departmental Honors Program where I am researching sex offenders.

Melissa Ceballos (Staff Advisor)
Hi everyone! I’m Melissa Ceballos and I am super excited to be your Staff Advisor! I am currently the Graduate Coordinator for Alternative Breaks, where supports interns, experience leaders, and staff advisors in coordinating their AB experiences. I am a second year master student in the College of Education and will be graduating in May from the International Education Policy program. I earned my undergraduate degree in Government and Politics, with two minors in International Development and Conflict Management and Secondary Education, from UMD. As an undergraduate student I was involved in the LSCL office since my freshman participating in many programs including AB. I have served as a participant, leader, and intern! It is crazy to think that this will be my fifth AB experience. I am very passionate about education all over the world and constantly finds ways how to get involved with education systems nationally and internationally.

Richa Beher
Hi! My name is Richa Beher and I am a Freshman Cell Biology and Genetics major from Elkridge, MD. I chose to participate in this AB experience because I am interested in investigating human trafficking in the in the communities that surround campus, learning about the ways in which nonprofits are mitigating the issue, and volunteering with these organizations to understand their inner workings. While light is shed on human trafficking in other countries, domestic human trafficking goes unnoticed most of the time. I am passionate about service, philanthropy, and health care. On campus, I am involved in research, tutoring, and in the Help Center. In my free time, I enjoy hiking, running, exploring new places with friends, and eating good food!

Jordan Dallwig
Hi, I am Jordan Dallwig and I am a sophomore Kinesiology major at University of Maryland on a PT track. I am from Sykesville, MD. Service and I have had an intertwining history through out my life. With my father being a Pastor and myself being heavily involved in the church I have attended and help lead multiple missions/service trips throughout the nation and the globe. I have done many trips of service to DC but never have they been based purely on fighting human trafficking. I am excited for a week of learning and service in a city I hold close to my heart.

Zach De Leon
Salutations! My name is Zach De Leon and I am currently a sophomore at the University of Maryland, studying Information Systems and Supply Chain Management. I am from Rockville, MD. I am a member of several different organizations on campus, including the rugby team and the Global Communities living-learning program. I chose to be a part of the Human Trafficking Alternative Break trip because human trafficking is an area that many people, myself included, could benefit from learning more about, and I am excited to spend the week serving and learning!

Kristin Melvin
Hello!  My name is Kristin Melvin.  I am a sophomore English major at the University of Maryland.  I decided to join this Alternative Breaks human trafficking trip because I wanted to focus on service for Spring Break this year.  I usually just hang out with friends back at home, but when I saw that UMD offers service trips, I knew that I wanted to be a part of one.  I chose the D.C. trip because I believe that it is important to be aware of injustices and crimes that occur in our immediate community.  In the past, I’d heard stories in the news about busting human trafficking cases within the metro area, but that only took up maybe 60 seconds of time on the evening news.  I am eager to learn more about labor and sex trafficking in D.C., as well as what volunteers can do to raise awareness and combat the problem.

Kanta Mendon
Hi! I am a junior Criminology and Government & Politics double major. I am interested in possibly going to law school for international human rights law and would like to help women globally fight for their rights. I became interested in learning about human trafficking my freshman year after watching "Half the Sky" and decided that I would like to get to know as much information as possible about it which is why I am on this trip!

Jessica Pottenburgh
Hello! I am Jessica Pottenburgh and I am a sophomore at the University of Maryland , College Park. I am a member of the Honors College and majoring in general biology on the pre-medical track. This is my first Alternative Breaks experience and I am really excited to learn as much as I can. I chose the Human Trafficking experience because I feel that it is an issue that not many people know a lot about realize that it is an issue that happens around the globe, even in the United States. I hope I can take what I learn on this experience to help spread awareness on this crucial issue.

Samarth Shah
Hello, I'm Samarth Shah and I am a sophomore studying Supply Chain Management & Information Systems at UMD. I am the treasurer of the Global Communities Student Assoc. as well as a Brand Ambassador and Peer Mentor for terpAMA. Human Trafficking was a problem I did not know much about so this trip drew my intention after reading the description and realizing how massive of a problem it is in the US and especially around the world.
